The Woods to hold Tournament of Champions
The following is excerpted from a 3/5/17 article in the Martinsburg Journal
HEDGESVILLE - The Woods and local groups are partnering to support the area through golf in the coming months.
Thirteen charities have already scheduled to be part of The Woods' Tournament of Champions.
This is the first year for the Tournament of Champions, which will feature the tournaments throughout the spring and summer and the winning team of those will face off in a tournament at the end of the season.
"We've been looking for something to give back to the community. It just came to me," The Woods golf pro Ron Springer said.
Springer hopes that this helps the tournaments gain more participants after seeing numbers decrease recently.
"There's been a dropoff in the industry itself. Not that there's been a down turn in tournaments but a down turn in the number of people in tournaments," Springer said, adding the Tournament of Champions is also a great way for the charities to make more money.
The top three teams in the championship tournament will earn their charity extra money. The first-place team will earn $2,000 for their charity, the second-place team $1,000 and the third-place team $500. The winners themselves will also earn prizes.
Springer noted that the first year might not show a huge boost in participation, but he hopes that it's something The Woods and the programs can build on.
The first tournament kicks off May 1, benefiting the Berkeley County BackPack Program. The tournaments will last through August, leading up to the big event.
